Chapter Twenty-Six
âSure you donât want to come?â Adam looked up at her as she stood by the car. âItâs a long drive into town, I know. Iâm not very nimble at the moment, and I feel like Iâm sitting a kilometre from the steering wheel, but Iâd keep you safe.â
Ivyâs heart flipped like a pikelet. Adam glanced back at Michael who sat solemn-eyed in the back seat. He could barely see above the door and out the window, and craned his head up, tortoise-necked.
âPerhaps we can go into town together another time.â
âPerhaps,â she teased and was sure she saw Adam blush. It was new to see a grown manâs face turn pink. It was impossible to hide her smile.
âMaybe we can go window shopping,â he was quick to add.
âDiamonds!â Michael piped up.
âDiamonds?â Ivy laughed. âWhat are we going to do with them?â
Now Adam really did blush.
âMum reckons theyâre a girlâs best friend,â Michael said, and was silent again. His dad began to laugh, though, and sat there shaking his head.
âWe only go into town once a month, though, right?â
Adam looked down and rubbed the back of his neck but said nothing.
âSounds fun. But tonight is boyâs night out. Iâll have coffee and hot milk ready when you come back.â
âDadâs gonna get chocolates.â
âYeah, letâs go with chocolates, first off.â Adamâs smile was wry.
âTo share with the coffee?â Ivy felt like she was out of the loop. âDo you like chocolate?â she asked, bending to look into the little boyâs eyes. Michaelâs face broke into a freckled grin.
âYeah, âcourse I do. Everybody does, and thatâs why heâs gotta go to the shops to get some, âspecially.â
âOh, I see.â But all Ivy knew was that once upon a time, Adam OâRourke had been a dour cowboy who didnât want to get in the ute for groceries, and the next minute he had the urge to go to town for chocolates. Then again, she supposed he wanted to spoil Master OâRourke there in the back seat, and she couldnât blame him for that. He had certainly waited long enough.
âYou take some selfies, wonât you? Iâll give you my mobile so you can take some shots to bring back for me to see.â Ivy went to get her phone, but Adam stayed her with his hand, shaking his head.
âNext time weâll get a snap of the three of us.â
Ivy was smiling as she waved goodbye. As she meandered slowly towards the house, she realised it was still lighting up her face.
She glanced to her right at a movement in the corner of her eye. It was Seth. Adam had taken on the young stockman to help out, since there wasnât a lot Adam could do around the station just then. The white-blonde worker was thin as a whip and jittery as a snake cornered in a chook shed. Nevertheless, he seemed to know what he was doing and gave Adam no cause for complaint, so Ivy supposed she was the last person who could find fault.
